At around 9:30 AM at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi, a round was accidentally discharged from a passenger’s licensed pistol during pre-boarding security screening, injuring two security screeners.
Key Details:
The Flight: The passenger, identified as a resident of Azamgarh travelling with his wife, was preparing to board Air India Express flight IX-1810 to Mumbai.
The Incident:
As required by aviation protocols, the passenger had declared carrying a licensed weapon. During the inspection process in the security hold area, the gun accidentally went off—with the bullet ricocheting off a hard surface or floor—striking two staff members.
Victims:
Both victims are screeners with AAI Cargo Logistics and Allied Services Company Limited (AAICLAS). A female staff member sustained an injury above her knee/thigh, and a male colleague suffered an injury to his hand/thumb.
Current Status:
Both injured personnel were rushed to the nearby New Laxmi Trauma Centre and are in stable condition. Local police have detained the passenger for questioning and launched an investigation into potential security or handling protocol breaches.
