Nag Panchami is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated on the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the holy month of Shravan. It holds deep religious, mythological, and ecological importance across India.

Key Significance of Nag Panchami

  • Spiritual Protection: Serpents are revered as guardians of wealth and subterranean realms. Worshipping them is believed to protect families from snakebites, evil forces, and Kaal Sarp Dosh.

  • Mythological Connections: The day honors serpent deities like Vasuki (adorning Lord Shiva’s neck) and Sheshnag (the multi-headed serpent holding Lord Vishnu). It also commemorates Lord Krishna overcoming the venomous snake Kaliya in the Yamuna River.

  • Ecological Harmony: Falling during the peak of the monsoon, snakes often emerge from flooded burrows. Traditionally, farmers express gratitude to snakes for preying on rodents that destroy crops, highlighting human co-existence with nature.
